Why I chose this over the other options: With so many options on the market choosing the perfect solution for me was not an easy one. I had a few things going against me- you see when we re-designed our kitchen we decided on going with open shelving in a small area of our kitchen, so we only have lower cabinets- aesthetically pleasing, but means that we have to be strategic with what we decide to purchase and place with the small space we have (the fact that my partner downsized from a huge house to this one doesn’t help this situation). So here we are- We had a small toaster oven (that I deemed useless because you couldn’t fit more than a bagel in there, and a toaster; it is just the two of us and it is such a waste to heat up the oven and the whole house to cook 2 small stuffed clams; I was in the market for an air fryer because I love how crispy food comes out in them- I needed the perfect all-in-one solution. The market for toaster ovens with air frying isn’t as large as the air fryer market so the major competitors were the Ninja Foodie, Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster, NuWave Brio, and Breville. The process of elimination was as follows:
Price: My budget was $200 and under for a new appliance- Immediately the Breville and Ninja were eliminated, I was left with a few different Cuisinart and Black and Decker Models and the Nuwave.
Size: Because I was looking for something to function in place of my oven, I needed something tall and wide- the Nuwave and Cuisinart models were tall but not wide enough for my casserole dishes, nor deep enough to cook a pizza bigger than a personal pan in. This left me with the Black and Decker.
After a month of use these are the pros and cons I experienced:
Pros:
- I have achieved my main goal- finding a replacement for my full-size oven. In the last month, I have only used my full-sized oven once, for a very large batch of wings.
- The size of the oven allows for many uses- you can cook anything from a whole chicken to a 12-inch pizza! If you have a large family that loves toast- you’ll be happy to know that you can fit up to 8 slices of bread!
- The functions are easy to use and very self-explanatory- you literally just have to select the function (options include- no preheat; bake; air-fry; toast; bagel; pizza; broil; toast; warm and reheat). Once you select the function then you choose the temperature and finally the time. When selecting certain functions like toast instead of choosing the temperature you select how many slices you have in the oven.
- The oven is very quiet as far as the fan goes while baking and on the air fry function- I have heard some air fryers that have a constant audible hum.
Cons:
- The cord length and location can be a problem for some people- I only had one place in the kitchen that this could fit and while I understand why they need to keep the cord short for safety reasons, sometimes a girl just needs an extra inch or two! The cord comes out of the right side of the oven and according to the website measures 24 inches (0.61 m), I had to buy a small extension to make the placement of this work. I just wish there was a photo or some more information regarding the location of where the cord came out from on the website.
- I know a few sentences above I mentioned how quiet this thing is… but there’s a noisy side to it too. If you live in a house where you have to be quiet and the kitchen or oven is near a quiet zone then you need to be aware of this- every time you turn the oven on to select a fuction, start a function, preheating has been completed, or the oven is done there is a loud beep. I have yet to find an answer on how to turn this off (if you know the secret- please put it down below).
- As much as I love the functionality of this- if you are looking for an air fryer and aren’t in need of oven features then you are better off getting a unit that functions as just an air fryer. I came to this realization when making hand-breaded chicken tenders. I couldn’t just place the chicken in the air fry basket and cook because I was worried about the two heating elements on the bottom. I decided to put the basket on the upper level and a flat pan below (which functioned as intended and caught the few drippings), this inhibited the airflow through the air-fry basket. My friends with regular air fryers do not have this issue because the drippings just flow to the lower pan- they have to flip their food too. My food came out crispy just the same but the drippings are a major pain!
- I don’t know what they used to make the lining of this thing but it is near impossible to get the inside sparkling clean. Crumbs and drippings are semi-easy to clean by lining the crumb tray but the splatter that goes on the sides just bakes and cakes on. If you’re neurotic about stains on appliances like me, this will bother you.
Overall:Â I would repurchase this again because it fulfills all the needs that I personally have. With some small modifications like a cord extender, I was able to place this in the desired location. My ultimate goal was to find something to take over baking and toasting needs which this does a fantastic job with. The air fry feature was a total bonus that I use often. I also use the keep warm feature almost every day to warm plates prior to serving so food doesn’t get cold upon hitting the plate, and to keep food warm while I cook other things (because I am extra about meals and I like a lot of options). I love the functionality of this and the size to accommodate all my meals. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to replace the same household items I wanted to, or to someone who lives in a place without a kitchen (this + a hot plate would be more than enough!!!).
